The Promoting Leadership & Indigenous Astronautics Development, Education & Science (PLEIADES) initiative acknowledges the unique and diverse cultural histories, traditions, sacred rituals, and time-tested knowledge systems of Indigenous people that have arisen from deep connections to specific lands and waters.
The PLEIADES initiative envisions increased and full participation of Indigenous Elders, students, researchers, scientists, scholars, professionals, and community members in science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics (STEAM) and Space-related education, programs, research, and missions.
PLEIADES aims to increase the understanding of and interest in STEAM as well as Space-related fields for Indigenous peoples by developing holistic mentorship, relevant curriculum, education scholarships, and research opportunities.
Our mission is to provide equitable access to STEAM and Space-related opportunities to Indigenous communities.
PLEIADES members will explore Indigenous ways of being, knowing and doing, embrace Indigenous values like love, respect, wisdom, courage, humility, truth and honesty (7 Grandfather Teachings of the Anishinaabek). With appropriate permissions, members will integrate Indigenous guidance, teachings, and connections with nature, as they pertain to STEAM, space, space exploration, and space science.
This foundation will guide the invitation and involvement of Indigenous people in IIAS initiatives, participation in activities, development of partnerships, sharing of knowledge, and co-creation of initiatives between Indigenous communities and the IIAS.
The PLEIADES initiative has five Strategic Objectives (SO) to provide access to and create opportunities for Indigenous peoples in STEAM and Space-related efforts:
● Identify, recognize, and integrate “earth-sky legends” and “earth-sky words” in PLEIADES activities by interviewing elders and educators;
● Create STEAM curriculum aligned with NASA Native Earth | Native Sky (NENS) program that interweaves Indigenous legends as well as STEAM principles from national and state standards by using “evidence-based curriculum development protocols” to include culture and language in STEAM programming;
● Test the effectiveness of curriculum in summer camps and select partner schools; and
● Identify “iterative design principles of the program” using student assessments and tribal feedback to adjust the curriculum until it achieves the desired results.
Your support and contributions will enable us to meet our goals and improve conditions. Your generous donation will fund our mission.
